to tell Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner
Extend Florida’s voter registration deadline
until after Hurricane Michael.
| ||
Dear friend,
I’m Moné from Florida. I started this petition because
no one should be forced between staying safe in a
hurricane and voting in November. We're bracing ourselves
against Hurricane Michael while trying to fight back voter
suppression attempts.
Hurricane Michael will be the strongest storm to make landfall
in 13 years. In the days leading up to Florida’s voter registration
deadline, Florida residents--instead of registering to vote--were
evacuating or preparing for this Category 4 “life-threatening”
storm in order to protect our homes and families. By choosing
to not extend the voter registration deadline for all Floridians,
the Secretary of State excludes eligible residents from the normal
number of days they should have had to register if it weren't for
the unusual and unpredictable hurricane weather. This means
the state of Florida is forcing Black folks and other
potential voters to choose between their personal safety and
our fundamental right to vote.
We know this to be true. Black people are the hardest hit
by natural disasters because of draconian Republican
policies that divest from our communities and deny us
emergency relief. Don’t let voter disenfranchisement be yet
another hurdle faced by Florida residents post-Hurricane Michael.
A hurricane shouldn't wipe us out of the democratic process.
Folks in Florida already navigate an election system deliberately
designed to discourage their participation. Fewer voter
registration days only serves to further suppress civic
participation in a state with a long history of conservative
policies and ongoing efforts targeting Black voters. While
the people of Florida need to make sure they are safe,
Florida Republicans are choosing to play politics with our lives.
By signing our petition, you stand strong with voters in
Florida and make sure Secretary of State Detzner knows
this storm should be used to deny our democratic right to
vote in November. Tell Florida Secretary of State Kent
Detzner that the state of Florida and the rest of the nation
are watching. We will not allow them to play politics with
our lives. Officials like Detzner depend on anonymity, and
bluster from people like Trump to hide their role in keeping
Black voters away from the polls.
Dear friend, Join us in making it loud and clear to
Thank you,
