Hey dear friend,
The Associated Press just broke that 70% of Georgia residents being blocked from registering to vote are Black.1 Yes, you did read that correctly.
With just 24 days until the election, Republican candidate for governor and Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp is trying to suppress Black voters in Georgia. He is responsible for putting over 53,000 voter applications on hold. Even worse, most of these applicants have not been notified that their voter registration has been frozen.2
I am completely outraged. Why is it that the Black people make up 32% of Georgia's population but 70% of folks whose voter registration has been put on hold ?3 The numbers aren’t adding up here. Voter purging isn’t a result of a freak accident; It’s done with malicious intent. We are running out of time and urgently need your support to contact as many Black voters as we can before the election. Help us in our final push to contact voters across the country so we can fight voter suppression.
Secretary Kemp is in charge of voter registration and elections in Georgia4, and we see through his deceit. He froze thousands upon thousands of Black voters’ registration forms through “exact match” testing policies. These testing policies require voter applications to exactly match information on file with the Georgia Department of Driver Services or the Social Security Administration.5 If names do not match the state files or folks abstain from voting, their applications are frozen. And even if registered voters with “legitimate matches” fail to send back their address verification postcard, they’ll be barred from voting in the midterms.6
Voter suppression laws are filled with racial bias and create endless barriers for voters of color. And this isn’t just a problem in Georgia : it’s a problem nationwide. For example, in Wisconsin, strict voter ID laws barred 17,000 voters from voting in the 2016 presidential election. And in Kansas, Secretary of State Kris Kobach was condemned by the Supreme Court for barring more than 22,000 voters who tried to register but were denied for not having “proof of citizenship.”7
Dear friend, the clock is ticking in Trump’s America. We need to show up at the polls now more than ever before. Kemp and these other Republicans can’t stop the power of the Black vote. The fight is far from over and we need your support.
Donate $5 (or anything you can afford) today to help us reach out to as many Black voters as possible across the country before it’s too late.
