Maria Bautista just started a petition to demand New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio

NYC Should Rename Columbus Day to Indigenous Day.

It is time to address the systemic anti-Blackness of the fashion industry

Dear friend,

Demand Mayor Bill De Blasio rename Columbus Day to Indigenous People’s Day in New York City. Christopher Columbus introduced transatlantic slavery to the Americas, and a long list of atrocities committed against Black and Brown peoples -- including rape and genocide. It’s wrong to uplift our oppressor, and NYC renaming Columbus Day to Indigenous People’s Day is long overdue.

SIGN NOW. Tell Mayor De Blasio to rename Columbus Day to Indigenous People’s Day.

Just as all Confederate statues must come down, the name of
Christopher Columbus who chained and enslaved our people
doesn’t belong next to Martin Luther King Jr. among individuals
we commemorate in New York City. Today, we should honor the
strength and resilience of Native and Afro-Indigenous peoples across the
U.S. and the globe fighting back against ongoing erasure while healing
from the intergenerational trauma of colonialism.

OUR DEMAND: We refuse to let them erase us. Join us in
celebrating those who survived Columbus’ violent legacy -- by
renaming this day to Indigenous People’s Day.

Dear friend, since the founding of our nation, the struggles of
indigenous and Black peoples have been intertwined. Black Indians
-- many with ancestry going back to the earliest runaway or freed slaves
-- struggle for legal recognition that enables them to protect their culture,
land, and sovereignty as nations.1 Just this September, Trump is
moving our country backwards to the US Indian Termination policy era
by denying ancestral homeland rights to the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe
in Massachusetts.2 Another Afro-indigenous community in Loíza, Puerto
Rico -- considered by many to be the seat of Black culture in Puerto Rico
-- is the poorest neighborhood on the island. Following Hurricane Maria,
Loiza was among the hardest hit and still faces upwards of 70%
unemployment due to our government’s emergency aid failure and
ongoing racist, colonial relationship with Puerto Rico.3

PETITION: Today, stand in solidarity with Native and Black
communities struggling against Columbus’ lingering legacy
of oppression. We want an Indigenous People’s Day.

Because of the legacy of colonialism and Columbus, Black and Brown
communities share our struggle against exploitative labor, continued erasure
of our identity and history in this country, forced assimilation, and white
supremacy. We won’t celebrate our oppressor. With Indigenous People’s
Day, we celebrate our survival and our strength to overcome.

Will you join us in fighting to rename Columbus Day?
Tell Mayor De Blasio that it’s time NYC stop celebrating
Columbus and honor Indigenous People’s Day instead.

In Solidarity,

Maria Bautista
