Dear friend,

Thousands of employees at Marriott owned hotels across the country are striking due to stalled negotiations on better pay and increased safety protocols on the job.1 Last week, players from the Brooklyn Nets walked past the picket line in Detroit because the NBA doesn’t have a clear position on supporting working class people who are on strike.2 Marriott is the largest hotel company in the world, yet their employees are exploited and vulnerable to injury and sexual violence because of the company’s lack of care for their own staff.

When NBA teams cross picket lines they send a clear message that their entire franchise doesn’t care about the struggles of their fans and everyday working class people. At Color Of Change, we know that workers are powerful. As fans of the NBA and supporters of labor rights, we believe that together we can be impactful in calling on our favorite teams to support striking workers. With the new basketball season underway, and the NBA leading other leagues when it comes to racial justice, it’s time that the Association support the fight for class equity in real and tangible ways for their fans.

Only a few short years ago in 2011, NBA players themselves were fighting for their labor rights. They aimed to secure the best possible conditions from the Association for themselves, including ensuring a full contract payout regardless of their performance or injury. The players felt they deserved to have financial security despite the Association telling them otherwise; the Association even went as far as threatening to cancel an entire basketball season to intimidate the players.3 The players held out, and eventually won because they stuck to their principles. Right now, strikers in Marriott owned hotels are holding the line to fight for what they believe in and they need our help. Oftentimes, players just go where they are directed to by team travel staff and this intervention can give them the assist to ensure that they are showing up for their fans. Tell the Association that you support workers and that you want your favorite NBA team not to book at any Marriott properties until strikes are resolved.

Strikes are a last resort for disenfranchised workers who are fighting for their dignity and safety. One of the most urgent asks from Marriott workers is to increase safety protocols for some of their most vulnerable staff, including the option to pair up when cleaning a room to minimize risk or access to panic buttons for staff. Low wage restaurant and hotel workers are especially at risk of sexual harassment on the job. 9 out of 10 people who work in the hospitality industry experience sexual harassment during their work hours.4 Many who work in these industries are women and young people, an already marginalized group, and the low pay and lack of job security makes these workers even more vulnerable to harassment and lack of accountability from employers. Being poor should not compromise worker safety, and it’s time for NBA teams and their management to commit to their fans by refusing to cross the picket line when employees are striking.
