This campaign is a collaboration between UltraViolet and BLM Louisville community activists working on the ground to demand justice for Breonna Taylor.
Dear friend,
Moments ago, a grand jury announced that Brett Hankinson, one of the killers of Breonna Taylor, will get nothing more than the appallingly minor charge of "wanton endangerment."1
The other two officers, Jonathan Mattingly and Myles Cosgrove, got nothing. And with bond for Hankinson set at just $15,000, all three will be walking free tonight.
Worse yet, Hankinson is not even being charged for killing Breonna. He's being charged because of the shots fired into the neighbor's apartment. For killing Breonna, none of them got so much as a ticket.
We're conferring with legal experts and our allies at BLM Louisville about next steps as you read this. But one thing is clear : This indictment is a joke. We are NOT done fighting for justice for Breonna, and we will not stop until Black lives truly matter in America.
Will you donate $5 right now to help keep up the fight for justice for Breonna?
On the night of March 13, Louisville police officers Brett Hankinson, Jonathan Mattingly, and Myles Cosgrove beat down the door of Breonna's apartment and unleashed a spray of bullets, striking and killing her. They were in plain clothes and used a no-knock warrant.
Breonna was an EMT who dreamed of starting a family and becoming a nurse, who wanted to be a good role model for her sister and goddaughter.2 She did nothing wrong, and there's no chance for her to clear her name. But the officers who shot and killed her can and will be held accountable.
This grand jury proves the pervasiveness of white supremacy and is an insult to the idea of justice. Hankinson, Mattingly, and Cosgrove are murderers. They killed Breonna Taylor in her own home. There will be no justice until all of the officers who killed Breonna are held accountable for her murder.
For the past six months, we have stood behind Black Lives Matter Louisville and the Louisville community in demanding that Mayor Greg Fischer and AG Daniel Cameron fire, arrest, charge, and revoke the pensions of the three police officers responsible for Breonna Taylor's death. In the face of Taylor's murder, they have done nothing but perpetuate police violence and white supremacy.
Let's be clear : If it wasn't for the months of peaceful protests, TV ads, airplane banners, phone calls, and everything else our coalition has mobilized, we would not have gotten this far in the fight for justice for Breonna. But we cannot stop fighting now.
Breonna's life mattered. Together, we will continue to support BLM Louisville and demand that all three police officers responsible for Taylor's death be fired, arrested, and charged.
Will you chip in $5 to continue demanding justice for Breonna Taylor?
