Dear friend,

Last night, we lost trailblazing Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. During her 27 years on the Court she repeatedly stood firm in her protection of many issues important to Black and Brown people including voting and workers’ rights, affirmative action, and women’s and LGBTQ equality. Mitch McConnell has already expressed his plans to bring Justice Ginsburg’s replacement to a vote on the Senate floor as soon as possible. This is the same Senate Majority Leader who hasn’t passed a bill to address the pandemic in nearly seven months. With less than 50 days left until the election, sign our petition and demand that your Senators wait until the inauguration of the next President to replace Justice Ginsburg.

Mitch McConnell’s Senate has done nothing for months while hundreds of thousands of Americans — who are disproportionately Black and Brown — have died of COVID-19. Millions more have lost their jobs and small businesses due to the Senate’s refusal to pass a meaningful COVID relief bill, while McConnell said he felt no urgency to act. Ginsburg’s family told our grieving country that her “most fervent wish was not to be replaced until a new president [is] installed."1 Yet mere moments after Justice Ginsburg died, McConnell has decided that it’s time to get something done, only it’s not freezing evictions or renewing extra unemployment benefits. Instead, he wants to ensure that the Supreme Court is positioned to attack and ignore our communities for another generation. Stand up for our communities and send a message to your Senators that the next President be the one to replace Justice Ginsburg.

While Mitch McConnell assumes he has the votes to push a new Justice onto the Court, we’re seeing signs that he may not have the lockstep support he’s expecting. Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski (R) went on the record hours before the announcement of Ginsburg’s death to say she would not vote to confirm a Supreme Court nominee this close to an election2, and she may not be the only one choosing country over party as November 3rd approaches. We just need 51 Senators to hold the line and stand up for our communities, which means it’s on all of us to ramp up the pressure. We need to apply all the pressure we can on the Senate. Tell your Senators to wait until the next inauguration to appoint Justice Ginsburg's replacement.

Dear friend, we know 2020 has been an extremely difficult year. It can be hard to keep up with it all — especially as we deal with the consequences of the Senate’s failure to address this pandemic. It’s understandable to feel scared and even helpless, but now is not the time to give up on the fight for justice. We’ll keep fighting, but we are stronger when we’re all doing our part together. This is a fight that we can win. Tell your Senators that they shouldn’t appoint a Supreme Court Justice until after the inauguration of the next President.
