Dear friend,
The nightmare for wolves that we all feared is coming true. Following the Trump Administration's national wolf delisting, Wisconsin set a rushed and reckless wolf hunting and trapping season late last month.
Email newly-confirmed Interior Secretary Haaland and the White House today to urge them to rescind the Trump wolf delisting.
What happened in Wisconsin was horrific. In fewer than three days, hunters and trappers–many of them using packs of dogs–killed more than 200 wolves. The poor preparation and planning by the state’s wildlife agency (WDNR) was compounded by its unwillingness or inability to enforce wildlife laws.
Wolves were gunned down at night and tormented by pursuing dog packs. The wolf hunting quota was exceeded by 82 percent. It was a practically lawless hunt. This shocking abdication of law, ethics, and responsibility to conserve wildlife cannot become the norm, and it cannot be without consequences.
Ask the Biden Administration to stop the next Wisconsin before it starts.
Wisconsin’s Department of Natural Resources has asserted for years, in court and in public, that, if given the chance, they were capable of “managing” wolves in their borders. It took them just days to demonstrate that to be false.
It will take years for the state’s wolf population to recover from this loss. And the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has learned nothing from this nightmare–they are already preparing for the next hunting season in the fall.
The Biden Administration must act. Too many states continue to have a reckless approach to the conservation of predator species, such as gray wolves. It took decades to get the unfinished business of wolf recovery this far. Given the chance, states may wipe out all of the progress made to date.
This must be a top priority for incoming-Interior Secretary Haaland. In her first 100 days as Interior Secretary, the Department must reverse Trump’s wolf delisting. Michigan may repeat Wisconsin’s failed model and other states may soon follow. Wolves can’t wait and neither can we. Please email the Biden Administration today.
Thank you for your commitment to wildlife and wild places.
Sincerely,
Leda Huta
