Since before the start of the pandemic, child care affordability and accessibility has been dismal for both families and child care providers. With the pandemic, conditions have gotten much worse and child care accessibility and affordability have plummeted.
Child care costs for families are very challenging to budget—and that’s if families have access to a child care provider at all ! I’m a parent of a 20 month old and a 4 year old and infant care was the most difficult resource to find. I joined several waitlists with my first child and didn’t get a call back until she was almost a year old.
Across the nation, child care deserts exist, ranging from as low as 22 percent in Maine to as high as 77 percent in Utah, with the average being around 51 percent. Child care deserts are areas with little or no licensed child care capacity.
On the flip side, child care workers are not highly paid and conditions are harsh. Small children demand a high level of care and attention and require a great deal of support for the development of their minds and bodies. The pandemic has made these conditions even more strained as many child care providers have closed and do not anticipate opening up again. Many of these providers are small, women-of-color owned businesses.
