Dear friend,
Gray wolves are fighting a losing battle to simply survive.
Five wolves were recently found dead in northeastern Oregon,1 likely a result of poisoning. Last fall, a wolf that had ventured into Nebraska was killed by a rancher.2 And a sickening wolf hunting and trapping season in Wisconsin in February claimed the lives of more than 200 gray wolves.3
Wolves urgently need the protections of the Endangered Species Act reinstated. Please support our campaign to restore these protections with a tax-deductible gift today.
The killings in Wisconsin are the only evidence that the new Secretary of Interior should need to rescind the Trump wolf delisting that his Administration finalized on its way out the door. The Trump Administration's callous and unscientific abandonment of wolf recovery was widely opposed by scientists, legal experts, and activists like you and me.
And it led to utter carnage and a failure of conservation law enforcement in Wisconsin. Its hunting and trapping season lasted just three days but led to the violent deaths of at least 216 wolves, 82 percent more wolves than its already-aggressive state limits allowed.4 Wolves were gunned down in the dark of night, chased to their deaths by dog packs, and caught in leghold traps before being killed by their assailants. That's not conservation, dear friend. That's outrageous and state-sanctioned slaughter.
Every day that wolves are without the protection of the Endangered Species Act, they are in grave danger. Please donate now and be part of our team to make them safe.
And the rush to violently target gray wolves does not end in Wisconsin. Michigan is considering a wolf hunting season, and in Montana and Idaho, where wolves lost protections in 2011, legislators are considering allowing deadly neck snares, increased trapping, and even wolf bounties. We can't leave the fate of this species to the deadly whims of misguided state legislatures and conflicted or inept wildlife agencies.
The Biden Administration and Secretary of Interior Haaland can correct these horrendous wrongs by rescinding the Trump wolf delisting and again protecting gray wolves under the Endangered Species Act.
The previous Administration operated in service to special interests in the extractive, ranching, and consumptive industries. The decision to abandon wolf recovery was a political one, not backed up by science, and contrary to the spirit of the Endangered Species Act.
Please support the relisting of gray wolves under the Endangered Species Act with a tax-deductible gift today.
Chippewa Tribal officials in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Minnesota recently spoke out opposing the reckless Wisconsin hunt.5 They drew specific attention to "the poor application of scientific decision-making in wolf
management."
It is this utter failure by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to do the basic work of conservation and law enforcement and the rush by other states to ramp up inhumane wolf killing that serves as a sickening illustration of the urgent need to again protect wolves under the Endangered Species Act.
We are advocating in Washington, DC and on the ground around the country to build support for the resumed and continued protection of gray wolves. Please join us with your support.
Thank you for your commitment to wildlife and wild places.
Sincerely,
Leda Huta
