Dear friend—I’ll try my hardest not to go on a long embittered rant about how betrayed I feel about plans to reopen the Homestead detention center, but I can’t make any promises. In 2019, the American Friends Service Committee and partners in Florida worked with advocates across the country to shut down the nation’s largest detention center for migrant children in Homestead, Florida, which was notorious for its human rights violations and the role it played in Trump's family separation policy.
Now the Biden administration wants to reopen the “emergency influx” facility, on the heels of reopening a similar facility in Texas – and we are once again asking for your help.
President Biden must keep his promise to treat immigrants with the respect and dignity we all deserve. Reopening Homestead—or any child detention center—places young people in greater danger, especially during this pandemic. Alternatives exist – and should be used. These include adopting community-based alternatives to detention that uphold and protect the rights of children.
We got this detention center shut down during the Trump administration. I shouldn’t even have to be writing this email in a Biden administration! We must demand that this center stay closed, all others must shut down, and we must immediately end child and family detention and separation. Keep fighting, Candelaria Vargas, Daily Kos.
