Friend, Beatriz was three years old when U.S. authorities separated her from her father, Jairo, shortly after they arrived from Guatemala at the U.S. border on Christmas Eve 2017. He was detained and developed pneumonia while Beatriz was sent to New York, where she faced abuse. This is what Zero Tolerance is. The Interagency Task Force on Family Reunification has posted a call for public comments to address how the U.S. government can avoid repeating family separation. To date, the Trump administration's cruel and inhumane family separation policy tore over 5,500 children from their parents without a plan to reunite them. Hundreds remain separated today.
When we talk about family separation, we are talking about babies who were ripped out of their families' arms by the government. What separated children have experienced is unconscionable. Nothing less than an immigration system based on respect and compassion can undo the damage caused by purposefully ripping a child away from their parents.
The Biden administration must take accountability for family separation. They must bring justice to the families who suffered under this horrific policy and work to ensure such policies can never see the light of day again.
This is our opportunity to flood the administration's request for comments with our demands. This is our chance to make our voices heard - but we only have until Tuesday, January 25 at 11:59 P.M. E.T.
Can you help us in our fight to end family separations ? Keep fighting, Jayleen Alvarado, Daily Kos. |
