Friend, 2021 was a massive disappointment in federal minimum wage news. Since 2009, the federal minimum wage has stayed stagnant at $7.25 - far less than the wage needed to support the cost of living anywhere in the country.
As more and more working people are unable to keep up with the cost of living in their state, even voters from conservative states favor raising the federal minimum wage. From 1966-1980 Congress’ decision to raise the wage led to a significant drop in earnings inequality between Black and white Americans. Raising the wage floor is a significant tool to help close the racial wage gap, and centering the financial freedom of Black workers and other frontline laborers who work some of the most important jobs of our labor market. Friend, it is inexcusable that Congress would let another year pass without raising the federal minimum wage - especially considering the risks essential workers are asked to face. May 2022 be the year that working families see the economic liberty they’ve longed for, and the year we move one step closer to finally closing the racial wage gap, once and for all. Keep fighting, Jayleen Alvarado, Daily Kos. |
