Dear friend,
This month marks 20 years of detainees held at Guantánamo Bay.
Guantánamo is a horrific symbol of torture, indefinite detention, and injustice.
But it’s more than a symbol: thirty-nine men, all Muslim, are still held there in violation of international law, most without facing charges or trial. Despite decades of promises by multiple U.S. presidents to close the facility.
Here’s the good news: the U.S. Senate just met for the first time in thirteen years to discuss next steps, and after massive grassroots outcry, two detainees were cleared for release.
That’s the power of our advocacy, and exactly why we must ramp up the pressure, friend.
Friend, here are the facts : since 2002, hundreds of men and boys have been detained, tortured, and denied their rights at Guantánamo. Thirty-nine of them are still there. All of these actions are grave human rights violations under international law.
The U.S. government must commit to truth, accountability, and remedy for the violations committed at Guantánamo. This is, no doubt, a process that will require transparency and reckoning. President Biden can start by transferring detainees elsewhere and closing the facility.
One of the unlawfully imprisoned people there is Toffiq al-Bihani.
He was sent to Guantánamo in 2003, tortured by the CIA, and detained without charge or trial. He is still being unlawfully held in Guantánamo today. Almost twelve years ago, U.S. authorities determined that Toffiq could be transferred to Yemen if the security situation improved, or to another country. Saudi Arabia, where Toffiq has eleven brothers and sisters, has also agreed to accept him.
Yet he remains detained today, more than a decade after being approved for transfer.
In September, Amnesty International and its coalition partners delivered more than 300,000 grassroots signatures to the White House rallying for a closure.
Now, we’re doubling down : The situation in Guantánamo is clear : this detention center needs to close, and 2022 will be the year we FINALLY make it happen. Speak up today.
Thank you,
