This MLK Day, we honor Dr. King’s legacy by fighting to defend teaching Black history in our schools. Right-wing conservatives are on a ruthless mission to rewrite American history and maintain the corrupt, racist systems that exploit our communities and threaten our democracy.Teaching real history is legally banned in 7 states.1 Our educators are on the frontlines and risk being fired when they refuse to lie to our children. Next month is Black History Month, when most teachers create lessons to honor historical changemakers like Dr. King; but if they do so in states like Florida and Tennessee, they could lose their job.2That’s why we can’t give up on this fight. Our educators and our children deserve better. Friend, put power behind the movement to defend Black history! Chip in $5 today.
As we celebrate the activist, author, father, husband, minister, scholar, and world changemaker that is Dr. King, we honor him by ensuring that his legacy is never erased. We uplift the powerful words he wrote, which call on us to continue the radical justice work he led. Through our campaigns to defend Black history, we are celebrating educators and community leaders who teach Black history. We are demanding textbook publishers to make a public commitment to teach real history. And we are fighting alongside our educators when they are targeted. In Dr. King’s 1963 book Strength to Love, he stated, “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of convenience and comfort, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” Today, in honor of Dr. King, we ask that you join us in the movement to defend our educators and our history. Dear friend, chip $5 to strengthen our movement.
Until justice is real,
Jade and the rest of the Color Of Change team.
