Friend, last week the Senate passed legislation to award the Congressional Gold Medal to Emmett Till and his mother, Mamie. Emmett was only 14 years old in 1955 when he was brutally murdered for allegedly whistling at a white woman. His murder helped to spark the start of the modern Civil Rights Movement.
While awarding Emmett with a medal is a kind gesture, passing the Emmett Till Anti-lynching Act would be an even better gesture towards helping Emmett’s family ensure that what happened to him would never happen to anyone again. The Emmett Till Anti-lynching Act would for the first time designate lynching as a federal hate crime. The bill was introduced in 2019 by Congressman Bobby Rush and passed the house 410-4. As the bill was being considered by the Senate, Sen. Rand Paul prevented the bill from being passed by unanimous consent.
Congressman Rush has recently announced he will be retiring from the House. Let’s send Rush into the sunset of his career by passing legislation that would designate lynching as a federal hate crime, once and for all. Yours in the struggle, Marquese Averett, Daily Kos. |
