Friend, driving while Black shouldn’t be a crime, but in America, it very much can be.
The senseless murder of Tyre Nichols has yet again focused national attention on police policies and practices that disproportionately impact and kill Black people. Tyre Nichols should be alive today, but he isn’t because of a pretextual traffic stop.

Pretextual stops are widespread and ineffective. Since 2017, police have killed nearly 600
people during traffic stops - 26% of those deaths were Black drivers
despite Black people making up only 13% of the population.
It’s been nearly three years since the horrific killing of George Floyd and the 2020 global uprising for Black liberation, but policymakers are still failing to urgently respond to the public safety needs of Black communities while practices like racial profiling still go unaddressed among police departments across the country.
Black communities deserve justice. Black communities deserve safety. It is past time for lawmakers, many of whom took a knee to honor George Floyd’s memory, to prioritize the need to pass legislation that addresses the harms caused by racial bias in policing.
Sign if you agree: Congress must ban pretextual traffic stops.
