Friend,
The
train derailments in East Palestine, Ohio, and Detroit once again show
how rural, poor, and Black communities are the most vulnerable and worst
impacted by the petrochemical industry.
This
is the latest atrocity in a long line of climate disasters that
directly expose vulnerable communities to the downstream effects of
pollution. The chemicals spilled into the Ohio River affected the water
supply for 25 million people, putting their health at risk.
The
Hip Hop Caucus team is heading to the Ohio River Valley to address the
harm caused to our communities by this derailment. But our advocacy
needs to reach the halls of power, and we’re calling on officials to put
people over pollution and stop the expansion of this toxic industry in
communities of color.
Sign the petition: Stop The Expansion of the petrochemical industry!

There is no safe way to produce, transport or recycle toxic chemicals through communities. Full stop.
Corporate
lobbyists spent decades eroding safety rules for trains carrying
hazardous materials, and it worked—so much so, that the train that
released a toxic fireball wasn’t even classified as carrying hazardous,
flammable materials, and it wasn’t required to use the new braking
systems designed to prevent derailments.
We
can’t wait until the next disaster to do something. This derailment
could have been prevented, and we need to pressure our elected leaders
to act now.
Sign on and tell elected officials to protect frontline communities and stop the expansion of the petrochemical industry.
