Friend,
As I started to walk toward Tyre’s funeral this morning, I was reminded of my two boys who are around his age, and I thought to myself, “Black men deserve to grow old.” Tyre was a son, a father and a friend whose death undoubtedly leaves a hole in the hearts of many. I join my entire Hip Hop Caucus family in offering all who knew and loved Tyre our deepest sympathy.
The brutal murder of Tyre Nichols at the hands of five Memphis police officers is a harsh reminder of the continued and extensive existence of corrupt individuals in law enforcement and the detrimental impact this has on the fiber of policing.
Tyre’s death is also a reminder that corruption has no color. America’s criminal justice system is not just for Black Americans. The swift charges brought by Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy and the firing of the police officers by the Memphis Chief are respectable and appreciated. However, the damage is done. There is no justice for the loss of Tyre’s life.
Tonight at 9:30pm ET, we’ll continue our fight for justice and liberation by convening freedom fighters in Memphis for a conversation around police reform, how we heal, and how we move forward. Former Shelby County Commissioner Tami Sawyer and Rev. Dr. Earle J. Fisher of the Memphis People’s Convention will join us on Instagram Live, and I hope you’ll tune in for the conversation.
Elected officials at every level must make the necessary policy changes to save lives. And make no mistake : we will not stop until justice is served.
All power to the people,
Rev Yearwood
