Maldives (ONLY ONE) : Say NO to harmful longline fishing !

 

Hi, A marine paradise, the Maldives is home to some of the most extraordinary biodiversity on the planet. But the island nation is now facing a serious threat as its government considers granting new licenses for longline fishing. Can you take one minute to sign the petition against longlining in the Maldives? Let's urge the Maldivian government to reject new longline licenses and set the course for a healthier ocean.

Simply put, longline fishing is highly destructive and incompatible with a healthy ocean ecosystem. One in five animals caught by longline hooks are unintended catches, including endangered sharks, turtles, and seabirds. Longlines are often lost at sea and never recovered, killing animals long after the fishing boats have left. It's estimated that 740,000 km of longline mainlines litter the ocean each year — roughly 18.5 times the circumference of the Earth. And longlines can drive overfishing, undermining the livelihoods of local communities that rely on traditional, one-by-one fishing practices for their income.  Your voice can make all the difference.
