Rio Grande LNG (and the proposed Texas LNG and Rio Bravo Pipeline) is a clear case of environmental racism with enormous, devastating impacts on community health, Indigenous rights, endangered species, and our shared climate. Frontline community organizers from the South Texas Environmental Justice Network and the Carrizo/Comecrudo Tribe of Texas fought tirelessly to defend their homes, community, and for a livable climate. Months of intense pressure from them, grassroots activists, and allies led to this victory. And that’s where you came in: you tagged Chubb on social media, emailed and jammed their executive calendars, and signed a petition with over 350,000 messages to Chubb, that frontline organizers hand-delivered during the Insurance Global Week of Action. Together, we sent a loud and clear message to Chubb — that hundreds of thousands of people around the world are holding them accountable. And they HEARD it. So thank you, friend. |
So, what’s next ? The fight against Rio Grande LNG is still on because other insurers are still supporting it. And, Chubb is still insuring other methane gas terminals, like Freeport LNG. But Chubb dropping sends a crucial message to their peers : Rio Grande LNG is NOT worth the risk. This is a major crack in the insurance industry armor and methane gas, because remember, these projects can’t happen without insurance, which is why cutting off their coverage is so vital. We’re not stopping now. Together, we’ll get Chubb’s peers to back away from Rio Grande LNG. Together, we’ll keep the momentum against Chubb and get them to drop Freeport LNG and other methane terminals in the Gulf. And together, we’ll get these insurers to stop insuring methane expansion once and for all. Today, we’re taking a moment to celebrate. We hope you will too, friend. For a just future and liveable climate, |
