Friend –
We urgently need your help to stop a dangerous bill threatening immigrants, border communities, and our democracy. Texas lawmakers want to enact some of the most extreme anti-immigrant legislation our state has ever faced. These bills are driven by the white supremacist idea that there's an "invasion" at the border – the same logic that motivated the El Paso shooter. Two of those bills, Senate Bill 4 and Senate Bill 6, have already made their way to Governor Abbott's desk. But there's still time to stop the most radical of these proposals : House Bill 4. What does this bill do?House Bill 4 would make it a state crime to attempt to enter the State of Texas from Mexico between ports of entry. This bill would authorize local and state police – who are not trained in immigration law and have no right enforcing it – to arrest, prosecute, and even deport people without due process, regardless of whether they are eligible to seek asylum or other humanitarian protection under federal law. Please : Contact your state senator and urge them to oppose H.B. 4, shockingly anti-immigrant legislation that will override federal law and encourage racial profiling. How can you take action?Find your Texas state senator at wrm.capitol.texas.gov and contact them using the sample script below.
What should you know about the bills awaiting Governor Abbott's signature?Senate Bill 4 will impose a mandatory minimum jail sentence of 10 years on anyone convicted of assisting undocumented migrants. Simply driving someone to a doctor's appointment or giving a stranger directions could result in inflexible and harsh punishment in most cases. S.B. 4 will fuel mass incarceration and lead to more racial profiling and harassment. Senate Bill 6 would give Governor Abbott $1.5 billion of taxpayer money to use at his discretion for border-related operations, including the funding of a border wall and more razor-wire and floating barriers for the Rio Grande. The governor's unlawful border program is rife with civil rights abuses and has already caused deaths by drowning. These bills do not represent the Texas we are nor the Texas we want to be. State political leaders should be listening to the real needs of Texans instead of white supremacists. Let's do everything we can to stop H.B. 4 from joining S.B. 4 and S.B. 6 on Governor Abbott's desk. In this together,
ACLU of Texas
