Friend,
It's that exciting time of the year again when we all gather to make a difference on Giving Tuesday – which lands on November 28th ! And for those of you joining us for the first time this year, welcome to a global movement that's all about unleashing the incredible power of people and organizations to create a positive impact in our communities.
At Black Lives Matter, we're proud to participate in Giving Tuesday by helping raise funds for two different organizations that embody our movement's beliefs and practices. Each holiday season, it's a major part of our philanthropic efforts to seed the services, programs, and institutions that feed our community.
This year, rather than spending our dollars on a surplus of random things, let's work together to be intentional with our dollars by supporting Black-serving organizations.
Read more about these organizations below, and don't forget to make a donation and help us reach our $50,000 fundraising goal by midnight on November 28th >>
- Coalition for Food and Health Equity: The Coalition for Food and Health Equity builds power within communities through sustainable, community-grown cultures of health. They place hunger within the larger context of racial health equity, working to end hunger, improve health, and advance economic equity within historically marginalized communities. They are working towards building resilient communities of health through integrated health and nutrition services rooted in a politic of racial liberation and economic justice.
- Oscar Grant Foundation: The foundation was established in 2010 after a jury found former BART police officer Johannes Mehserle guilty of the killing of Oscar Grant. While Wanda Johnson, Oscar's mother, and her family continue to fight for justice for Oscar, the foundation exists to help mend the distrust between residents in predominantly Black, high-crime communities and law enforcement. Their programs are designed to build self-esteem in “at-promise” youth from the East Bay, and they encourage their young people and the police to find creative ways to see themselves and others as full of potential instead of a threat. The foundation offers community support through grief sessions as well as youth services and activities such as scholarships, school supplies giveaways, tutoring, and athletic programs, including three basketball teams named after Oscar.
This donation form will split your donation between both organizations. Funds go directly to the organizations.
This year, we haven't sat around waiting for opportunities to make a positive impact. Instead, we've taken active steps to create spaces filled with joy and hope for our communities. At Black Lives Matter, our dedication goes beyond the goal of ending police brutality and state-sanctioned violence against Black people. We're committed to dismantling white supremacy across all spaces and systems.
Our mission is clear : We're striving for a world where Black lives are no longer systematically targeted for harm.
