Friend : We are already witnessing how Hamas’ attacks on people in Israel and the Israeli government’s response in Gaza are exacerbating a global rise in Islamophobia and antisemitism.
Earlier this year, the White House released a national strategy that “outlines a whole-of-society approach to tackle the scourge of antisemitism in America.” Just last week they also announced they are developing the same to counter Islamophobia.
In 2004, Congress created a Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism when it passed the Global Anti-Semitism Review Act. Today, and as part of the emerging strategy, President Biden should immediately create a Special Envoy for Monitoring and Combating Islamophobia.
ACT NOW |
Hate crimes are not just statistics — they are the lived experiences of our family, friends, and neighbors. The U.S. government must do more to acknowledge and address these threats wherever and whenever they occur.
The Combating International Islamophobia Act, recently re-introduced by Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ), Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), and Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), details how the office of a Special Envoy would monitor, address, and combat Islamophobic incidents both domestically and globally. By leveraging diplomatic channels, the Special Envoy would foster international cooperation and collective action against Islamophobia, and help promote a culture of tolerance, understanding, and respect for religious and cultural diversity worldwide.
The good news is that we don’t have to wait for Congress to pass legislation to get started. We’re already hearing the White House is considering moving more quickly — Politico reported this week that the White House called Reps. Schakowsky and Omar to talk about a new Special Envoy. The situation demands immediate executive action, and a resounding call from activists like you can help tip the scales, so let’s push President Biden to act now.
The insidious linkage between global events and local hate crimes is not new. Now, as the United States experiences a surge in Islamophobic and antisemitic threats fueled by disinformation and dehumanization, it’s time to send a crucial reminder that "hate has no home here."
Stop AAPI Hate, a U.S.-based coalition dedicated to ending racism and discrimination against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, recently reminded us that, post-9/11, the scapegoating of Muslims fueled hate to levels so high that people perceived as Middle Eastern, Arab, or Muslim feared for their safety. Today, with extremist threats disrupting events organized by national Muslim advocacy groups across the U.S., we have a crucial duty to work to keep our communities — ALL our communities — safe.
Together, we’ll pave the way for a more tolerant and safer tomorrow.
Thank you for working for peace,
