Friend,
President Biden and Congress want to send billions of dollars and weapons to Israel. But this humanitarian crisis requires a political solution, not war.
Thousands of Palestinians and Israelis have been killed or injured. In Gaza, 4,000 children have been killed in the past month. The hostages taken by Hamas are no closer to release and face possible death due to the relentless bombing.
International calls for humanitarian relief and a ceasefire are met with increased bombing by the Israeli government.
War is not the answer. Jewish people and people from all backgrounds have been marching in cities across the U.S., demanding a ceasefire.
As Indigenous peoples across Turtle Island, we have experienced and know the long-term impact of war and militarism. We have lived through massacres and forced relocation. We have had our people taken hostage from our homes. And we say : war is not the answer.
Our history has shaped our values and traditions.
We can and must push our leaders to stand up for international law and end the ongoing bombardment and violence against civilians. Our tax dollars fund the overwhelming majority of Israel’s military budget.
Last week, as Secretary of State Antony Blinken was advocating to send $14 billion more U.S. taxpayer dollars to fund the Israeli government’s bombing of Gaza, Jewish peace activists interrupted him, shouting: “You have blood on your hands !”
Despite the massive amount of civilian lives lost, Congress is on track to send billions of dollars more for Israel’s military.
Just this week, Congress began drafting a new Authorization for the Use of Military Force which would allow the U.S. military to engage targets in the Middle East, further escalating conflict in the region. President Biden and political leaders must keep hearing from us : Ceasefire, not war. No funding for more weapons and bombs !
Hawwih (thank you) for protecting life,
Judith LeBlanc (Caddo)
Executive Director.
