U.S (NATIVE ORGANIZERS ALLIANCE ACTION FUND) : End NATIVE VOTERS SUPPRESSION with this easy fix.

Friend,

We're one year from 2024’s Election Day, and many states and local communities have elections this month.

In an attempt to suppress our votes, right-wing led state legislatures have created many barriers to impede voting that has a huge impact on rural and tribal communities.

Our mission is to organize Native political power to protect our sovereign rights, water, land, and sacred places. That includes showing our collective power in the electoral arena, including the fight against voter suppression.

One of the best ways to increase voter registration across Indian Country and turn out the Native vote on Election Day is automatic voter registration.

Twenty-four states and the District of Columbia automatically use the information most adults have already given their states -- name, date of birth, residence -- when they applied for a driver’s license or official ID. But there is no automated system in the other 26 states.

Democracy is strengthened when more people vote. Help us build Native political power by reducing barriers to voting and make Automatic Voter Registration available in every state.

Of all the impediments to voting, we can make sure getting registered isn’t one of them.

Here’s how it works right now. Eighteen states and D.C. offer “front end” registration, meaning people can register to vote when at the DMV or other government agency. The option is presented automatically, but registration itself requires an affirmative response.

Six states (Alaska, Colorado, Delaware, Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Oregon) offer a more comprehensive “back end” registration, where the voter is automatically registered, then given the opportunity to opt out, either at that time, or via a mailer sent afterward. This method, of course, results in higher registration rates and, ultimately, higher voter turnout too.

Yet as of today, in 26 states, there is still no automated system.

In these states, voters must actively seek out the opportunity to register, and given how busy people are, it’s a task that can easily be put off or forgotten until it’s too late. No one should be denied the right to vote based on a technicality that is so easy to fix.

Sign the petition today to reduce barriers to voting and make automatic voter registration available in every state.

If we work together, we can build Native political power by making it easier for all people to make their voices heard at the ballot box. That's part of how we build the multi-racial democracy we need to win our long-denied treaty rights.

Hawwih (thank you) for everything you do to fight voter suppression and turnout the Native vote.
