U.S : KILLING WOLF PUPS ?

Wolves are just beginning to reestablish themselves throughout the West. Every pack and every pup are important. Yet, state agencies and the Biden Administration are putting recovery in danger.

Just days ago, Oregon used a helicopter to gun down a yearling and two pups from the Lookout Pack.1 Particularly heartlessly, they used a tracking collar on the mother wolf to find the pups in order to slaughter them. They had already killed most of the adults. They left the mother. Washington state authorized the killing of endangered wolves from the Togo Pack this summer.2 Thankfully, those wolves eluded the state agents.

In the Northern Rockies, wolves from Yellowstone National Park are being targeted by hunters seeking trophies and bragging rights as soon as they leave its boundaries. At least 35 gray wolves3 have already been killed in Montana’s hunt–three of those were from Yellowstone Park.

It’s not just states that are a problem. The Washington Post reported4 that the Biden Administration’s USDA Wildlife Services killed eight wolf pups from an Idaho pack that local high school students had been following as a part of a multi-year class project.

These kids–and the kids that came before them–have followed this pack since 2003. When confronted by the students who bravely asked them to suspend their policy of killing wolf pups on federal public lands, the Administration not only denied their request–it defended the killing of these eight wolves and said that it may do so again.

Friend, we cannot let this stand. The Department of Interior needs to act now to protect gray wolves under the Endangered Species Act and stop this senseless killing.

We successfully petitioned the Department of Interior to review whether wolves have the appropriate protection under the Endangered Species Act. But the results may not be issued for 12 months that is not nearly soon enough.

Help us keep the pressure up to protect wolves and other endangered species with a tax-deductible gift today.

We will not relent until these wolves are again protected under the Endangered Species Act. The law gives the Secretary of Interior the option to do so immediately and we will keep increasing the pressure until these protections are in place. Please join us by supporting our work to defend wolves and other endangered and threatened species.

Thank you for your commitment to wildlife and wild places.

Sincerely,
