After winning the Presidency, Joe Biden declared to the nation that when his campaign was at its lowest, the African American community “always had my back and I’ll have yours.” It was Black voters in South Carolina who resurrected Joe Biden’s campaign from the dustbin of history, and gave him the energy needed to win the Democratic Party’s nomination. It was Black voters in Georgia who sent Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock to the US Senate giving Democrats the majority. But since winning his election, President Joe Biden has done very little for the Black community regarding its priorities that include but are not limited to : passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, the For The People Act, the George Floyd Policing Reform Act and the People’s Response Act. He also told members of the Congressional Black Caucus to not expect any movement on reparations legislation. Black voters are the backbone of the Democratic party and the most loyal voting bloc of any yet continue lack access to power, justice, and accessibility because of the filibuster -- an old relic of the Jim Crow past that allows for those who are in the minority party to block legislation by merely “threatening” to filibuster. Democrats did not win the Senate Majority only to be obstructed by the Republican minority on issues that are important to us. If we want to pass historic legislation and protect voting rights, address climate change, cancel student loans, reimagine how policing is done in America - we need to get rid of the filibuster. With the next midterm election a little over a year away, our time is very limited. There is so much work to be done and we cannot afford to cede even an inch of progress !
