Friend, for years, mining interests have been vying to set up shop just outside the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness’ southwest border. Biden’s recent action helped forestall the immediate threat, but two mining leases owned by the company Twin Metals Minnesota, a subsidiary of a Chilean mining conglomerate, still loom.
If developed, the Twin Metals mine would leak sulfuric acid and toxic heavy metals into the watershed, contaminating ancestral Ojibwe land, wildlife habitat and cherished canoeing areas. The Biden administration must address Twin Metals’ proposal.
