The recent shooting on the set of Alec Baldwin's TV show after the actor fired a prop gun again highlights the urgent need in America for gun reform. With the Supreme Court poised to put politics ahead of preventing gun violence, we must continue pressuring our leaders to do the right thing.
Although gun violence is increasing in the U.S., our leaders have dragged their feet on passing any gun violence prevention legislation whatsoever. Common sense gun regulation, given its a deadly weapon, shouldn't be controversial. Anything that could kill you should be regulated -- logical, right ? Nope, not in America. Because here, some assert that the Second Amendment is sacrosanct and above being nuanced by regulation like everything else that is deadly.
The time for empty promises is over. It's time to act. That includes establishing an Office of Gun Violence Prevention to streamline the government's efforts in preventing gun violence. We must also reform the filibuster so we can pass gun reform legislation, and communicate to Americans how that legislation makes gun ownership safer for everyone involved.
These actions are the least our leaders could do to make school safer for every child in America. Every second we wait is a matter of life or death.
Thank you for fighting with us,
Mayra Souza, Daily Kos.
