Friend,
Every year when Independence Day rolls around, we have to ask ourselves : what is the 4th of July to the Hip Hop community ?
We
know that on July 4, 1776, Black Americans were not free. Instead of
celebrating “freedom” tomorrow, we’re gathering to fellowship and plan
the next phase in our liberation.
The fact is that the systems that kept Black Americans oppressed are still alive and well.
Our
country is still grappling with the enduring legacy of slavery from
glaring health disparities to the wealth gap between Black and white
communities.
Don’t
believe us ? Just look at the recent Supreme Court decisions handed
down—one that strikes down affirmative action, and another that blocks
President Biden’s debt relief plan keeping millions of Black borrowers
saddled with unpayable student loans. We cannot celebrate while these
glaring inequalities remain.
Hip
Hop Caucus strongly believes that in order to see true freedom and
racial justice in this nation, oppressors need to right the wrongs of
their ancestors.
The
Reparations Now Resolution is a crucial piece of legislation that
recognizes the federal government's responsibility to provide
reparations for the enslavement of Africans and the ongoing harm
inflicted upon millions of Black people. This 4th of July, we’re working to mobilize support for the legislation and move the needle closer toward justice.
Before
the fireworks start, will you take a minute to send a letter to your
member of Congress urging them to take action on the Reparations Now
Resolution?
