Friend,
House Republicans, intent on maintaining the privileges of the rich while denying opportunity to all others, have proposed massive cuts to education -- $64 billion in cuts altogether -- at every level, from preschool through college.
Self determination and sovereignty requires economic progress for our people and communities. Cuts would throw buckets of sand into the engine that drives that progress forward.
These cuts affecting public education, preschool funding, and job training for all children and young adults, also puts at risk Title 1 school funding for Native students living in rural communities.
The impact of this bill would be far reaching and devastating to our communities. These cuts would eliminate Preschool Development grants and cut Head Start funds drastically, eliminating early opportunities for 51,000 young children.
This heartless bill would cut $14.7 billion from K-12 funding, leaving only $3.7 billion of the $18.4 billion budget and forcing the loss of 224,000 teachers.
It would wipe out Federal Work Study for 659,000 students trying to work their way through college.
It would end all Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants, need-based aid for 1.7 million students.
It would strip away job training from 126,000 youth and 294,000 adults, eliminating the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act.
Overall MAGA Republicans seek to cut 28% from the Department of Education, resulting in the loss of at least 220,000 teachers from classrooms.
Cuts to education and job training this extreme go to the heart of the right to public education, which is a treaty right AND a human right ! Does the federal government intend to fulfill treaty rights for Natives and constitutional rights for all ? Is education a privilege rather than a right ?
Hawwih (thank you in Caddo), for supporting the right to education for all !
