Thursday, August 31 @ 11:30AM : MARCH/VIGIL/RALLY FOR INTERNATIONAL OVERDOSE AWARENESS DAY: At a time where New York is losing more than 18 people a day to a preventable overdose, New Yorkers need more than awareness, we need action ! The Special Narcotics Prosecutor's Office (SNPO) is an extension of the racist, classist War On Drugs, and its existence continues the violent cycle of criminalizing drug users. Join us at City Hall Park as we mourn our loved ones and community members who have died from a preventable overdose, and demand that our state's leaders divest from the SNPO and invest in systems of care and harm reduction !!

Week in Review

Last week, VOCAL-NY joined more than 130 state and national organizations in releasing a roadmap for investing opioid settlement funds into evidence-based solutions proven to reduce overdoses and uplift people impacted by the War on Drugs. As reported in the New York Times, the roadmap demands an investment in care, instead of criminalization.

Also, last week, VOCAL-NY’s Civil Rights Union held an emergency rally at City Hall Park alongside lawmakers and community advocates to demand that Mayor Adams takes immediate action to decarcerate Rikers Island. VOCAL-NY leaders presented a list of demands developed in partnership with Jails Action Coalition and HALT Solitary that outline how the Mayor should respond to the humanitarian crisis at Rikers.
