Friend,
New
data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and NASA
verified what we already feared -- July was officially the hottest month
ever recorded.
As
temperatures have soared to record-breaking heights this summer, we
find ourselves grappling with the tangible impacts of climate change.
The tragic Maui wildfires that have claimed over a hundred lives and
counting and the recent devastating floods in Vermont stand testament to
the chaos that unbridled global warming will continue to unleash.
According
to the Environmental Protection Agency, 28% of all greenhouse gas
emissions in the United States come from transportation. That’s why the
Department of Transportation (DOT) wisely proposed a new rule that
required states and local governments to track greenhouse gas emissions
from vehicles on the nation’s highways.
Under
the rule, state agencies would be mandated to appraise traffic
congestion and set emission reduction targets. Crucially, it ensured the
findings were publicly reported, emphasizing transparency and
empowering city councils, local leaders, and everyday citizens with the
knowledge of whether goals are being set and benchmarks are being hit.
The
problem is the administration has announced the rule, it’s gone through
the legally required comment period and it’s ready to go go go -- but
yet, nothing has happened. The DOT has never released the rule !
This
rule is absolutely necessary in the fight against climate change. The
administration can’t wait any longer. Join us in pressuring President
Biden and Transportation Secretary Buttigieg to finally release the rule
and measure greenhouse gas emissions created by the national highway
system now!
It's evident that the climate abnormalities we're experiencing are not anomalies, but signals of an escalating crisis.
By instating this rule, the Biden administration would be taking another huge step forward in the fight against climate change. Empowering
state and local governments with the data they need would spur
innovative solutions tailored to specific regional needs.
From
urban areas exploring novel public transport solutions to rural zones
considering more efficient road networks, the ripple effect of this rule
will be transformative.
By
bringing the conversation to the forefront, we pave the way for
communities to engage in a dialogue about sustainable mobility and urban
planning. Such conversations will catalyze grassroots movements,
instigating local changes that collectively make a significant
difference.
In
this era of information, we should harness the power of data for
ecological advancement and global survival. The greenhouse gas tracking
rule is an embodiment of this principle.
Every
delay in the implementation of this rule is a missed opportunity. The
time to act is not tomorrow, next month, or next year. The time is now.
Make sure that President Biden and Secretary Buttigieg know we are
watching and demanding action by sending your direct message now.
Let's keep the pressure on and ensure our voices are heard. Every day counts in our fight against climate change.
