U.S (NATIVE ORGANIZERS ALLIANCE ACTION FUND): The DOE must Reject all applications for Hydrogen Hubs funding now !

Friend,

The oil and gas industry is at it again, working to create more energy sacrifice zones on Native lands. They are lobbying for billions of federal taxpayer dollars to be invested in the latest fossil fuel boondoggle -- so-called “blue” or “green” hydrogen, which despite the “clean” sounding names will actually increase fracking, and methane and carbon dioxide emissions.

At a time when the climate crisis requires we act now to phase out oil and gas production, nearly all hydrogen production -- including “blue” or “green” -- is from fossil gas.

A coalition of over a hundred Native and non-Native environmental justice organizations has issued a letter to warn state and federal lawmakers of the environmental risks of fossil-fueled hydrogen projects. Supporters and co-signers include the Native Organizers Alliance (that’s us !), Society of Native Nations, Indigenous Environmental Network, Tó Nizhóní Ání, Turtle Island Restoration Network, Carrizo/Comecrudo Nation of Texas, Tonawanda Seneca Nation, NAVA Education Project Diné, and Diné Citizens Against Ruining our Environment (CARE).

Now we would like you, friend, to sign on too as an individual grassroots co-signer. Tell the U.S. Department of Energy: Don’t experiment with new hydrogen energy that expands fossil gas production at the expense of the health of Native peoples and sacred places!

ADD YOUR NAME

Here’s the facts : A large-scale buildout of hydrogen infrastructure will further exacerbate the climate crisis and disproportionately harm people of color, low-income communities, and Indigenous peoples.

If we are really going to tackle catastrophic climate change and protect Mother Earth, we must phase out all oil and gas production by 2030, that includes hydrogen. All hydrogen production uses vast quantities of water, is extremely dangerous to transport via pipelines, and emits harmful nitrogen oxides when combusted.

That’s why accelerating hydrogen development poses unacceptable threats to the climate, public health, and environmental safety. Our future generations are depending on us in this time of crisis. We cannot keep sacrificing our communities over and over again, in the name of corporate greed and technological experimentation. Our neighborhoods and our futures will not get a second chance.

It’s time for the Department of Energy to listen.

Join the individuals and organizations signing this letter now, and tell the DOE that state investments in renewable energy infrastructure and limits on carbon and methane emissions -- not taxpayer-subsidized handouts to the gas industry -- are the only pathways to a climate-resilient clean-energy world.

Hawwih (thank you in Caddo) for taking action today,

Judith LeBlanc (Caddo)
Executive Director.
