| | | As we're all watching the 2024 Summer Olympics, an event celebrated for uniting the world in the spirit of excellence, respect, and friendship, we need to address the forest fire in the room: why is Procter & Gamble (P&G) still a sponsor ? P&G’s track record resembles an athlete caught in a doping scandal—disregarding fair play and respect. Despite claims of sustainability, P&G sources Conflict Palm Oil from suppliers linked to deforestation and violations of Indigenous rights. These actions contradict the Olympic spirit, which promotes peace, respect, and the preservation of our natural world. So I’ll ask again, should Procter & Gamble still be a sponsor of the summer games? |
If you’re new to RAN, here’s the training montage : P&G has consistently failed to uphold environmental and human rights standards when it comes to how they source their products. In fact, in our latest Keep Forests Standing scorecard, we evaluated the top multinational brands driving deforestation and human rights violations through their supply chains, and found that P&G ranked dead last… in every category… as the worst laggard overall. And in the last year has actually moved backwards by publishing a weaker cross-commodity policy. You don’t win a race by running backwards. With a massive failing grade of "F," how can P&G continue this farce and brand itself as a champion of anything ? The Long Isun community in Indonesia sure doesn’t think so. For years, this Indigenous group has fought against the destruction of their ancestral forests by the companies doing business with P&G. The loss of their land threatens their way of life and exemplifies the broader impact of P&G’s supply chain on Indigenous peoples and ecosystems. |
| If P&G truly wants to embody the Olympic values, it needs a comprehensive Human Rights Defender (HRD) Policy right now. This policy would protect Indigenous communities like the Long Isun, ensuring their rights are upheld. Such a policy would prevent illegal land grabs, ensure ethical sourcing, and amplify indigenous voices. By taking these actions, P&G can align its practices with the values of excellence, respect, and friendship that the Olympics represent. The world’s greatest athletes are celebrated for their dedication, integrity, and hard work. Shouldn't the sponsors of this global event be held to the same high standards ? Let’s ensure the Olympics remain a beacon of hope and inspiration, supported by corporations committed to protecting our environment and respecting human rights. In solidarity, |
