U.S : "Proud Boys"… and Facebook.

02/10/2020

Dear friend,

White supremacist misogynists are celebrating big this week.

On Tuesday night, the President of the United States refused to condemn white vigilante violence. Instead, Trump told the Proud Boys—an anti-woman, "male-only" white supremacist group—to “stand by.” In addition, the moderator let Trump get away with using abusive language and racial slurs and spread racist disinformation on national TV.1,2

How did we get here, dear friend ?

For years, Facebook has enabled the viral spread of white misogynist hate, and it's only growing. Even while millions of us expressed outrage over Trump's debate antics, pro-Trump voices made up nine out of ten of the most popular posts on Facebook afterwards.3

Facebook executives admit that the platform is designed to favor rightwing extremism and inflammatory content.4 That's how Facebook helps white supremacists spread conspiracy theories into the mainstream and recruit new members.

And while Facebook executives profit from growing hate under Trump's presidency, Black, Indigenous, and women of color are left facing increasing violence online and offline, unemployment, and COVID-19.5

Trump is counting on Facebook and white supremacists to keep spreading fear and violence before, during, and after the election. The election is in just 32 days— will you take action today ?

Tell Facebook: Ban hate groups and hate speech.

Facebook isn't an innocent bystander in the rise of Trump and white supremacist misogyny. The company actively generates support for white supremacy : 64% of new extremist group members come from Facebook's recommendations.6

For years, Mark Zuckerberg has claimed Facebook cares about protecting democracy and will do better. But even as the stakes grow higher every day, the platform keeps failing women and people of color.

If we don't force Facebook to take action, white supremacist hate groups and militias will only keep growing in power and reach leading up to the election, to 'stand by' for Trump's next order. Will you help shut down hateful disinformation and violence ?

Tell Facebook: Block hate group disinformation and recruitment.

Thanks for speaking out !
