Hey friend,
I’m Scott Roberts -- Senior Campaign Director for the Criminal Justice team at Color Of Change. I want to take a time-out and connect with you on a personal level.
I'm going to keep it real with you. If you’re anything like me then you’re concerned. With less than 8 days out from the election, I am concerned about the senate confirmation for the Supreme Court, the nonstop police killings in our communities, and the rising death toll from the pandemic. It’s hard to stay encouraged during trying times.
But I will say this, fear friend. We are in this together. Despite the challenge before us, my team is not giving up. We are working around the clock to ensure that our communities get the justice they deserve.
What do I mean by that ? In just the last few weeks, my team has led powerful campaigns that will have a real and tangible effect on the lives of Black people.
Here is just a mini snapshot of our campaigns :
- Black and brown people in prison are paying outrageously high fees in order to connect with their loved ones in the midst of a global pandemic. Securus, a predatory prison telecommunications company owned by Tom Gores, preys on incarcerated people by charging excessive phone fees. Gores must be put on notice -- and we need more people calling out his callous business practices. So we are going to pressure all of Gores organizational partners to distance themselves from him. The good news ? We're building momentum. A few weeks ago, we pressured Tom Gores, prison profiteer, to step down from the board of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
- We are fighting to get justice for Breonna Taylor. And that means Attorney General Daniel Cameron must be held accountable. AG Cameron sided with the killer cops that took Breonna's life when he made the chilling announcement that none of them will face murder charges. Since then, several members of jury have come forward demanding a release of the transcripts, suggesting that Cameron misrepresented the grand jury process to the public. Clearly, Cameron has violated the code of ethics that shape his profession. Now we are calling on Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear to immediately appoint a new prosecutor and investigation.
- We are working to protect reproductive freedom. That is why, in partnership with local partners, we are launching a nationwide campaign calling on elected leaders and political candidates to defend bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom. Mass criminalization of pregnancy outcomes impact Black pregnant people at disproportionate levels. Prosecutors will be the first line of defense against this cruel attempt to rollback critical access to reproductive healthcare.
But we need your support to keep this work going. It won’t be easy. And it’s going to take everything we have to make sure these campaigns have the resources to succeed. Will you consider becoming a monthly supporter with Color Of Change? Your contribution will help power this important work.
YES, I WILL POWER THE MOVEMENT FOR JUSTICE!
Without independently funded institutions, it becomes almost impossible to push for the progressive solutions that will make a difference in Black and brown communities. That is why your monthly support is crucial. We cannot afford to slow down now. In this final stretch, we must keep going.
Here is how you can help.
- Commit to donating once per month in order to boost our campaigns program. That way we can raise enough resources to pressure decision makers on issues that matter most to our communities.
- Choose an amount below that feels powerful to you as an investment in this important work.
This is what forging a path towards justice looks like. With your help, we can create a new paradigm where alternatives to structural racism are prioritized over systems that extract wealth and inflict harm on Black and brown communities.
Can I count on you to become a monthly supporter?
Until justice is real,
Scott, Rashad, Arisha, Erika, Marybeth, Madison, Leonard, Malachi, Ernie, Ana, Ericka, McKayla and the rest of the Color Of Change team.
ColorOfChange is building a movement to elevate the voices of Black folks and our allies, and win real social and political change.
