Friend,
This week, all across the nation, we're coming together to celebrate our
illustrious historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) ! From
now until the 14th, it's National HBCU Week, and if you went or go to an
HBCU, tag us on social media @blklivesmatter and show us your pride !
HBCUs have been the driving force behind some of the most impressive
accomplishments in the Black community. Did you know that HBCUs produce
an astonishing 40% of ALL black engineers and a remarkable 50% of ALL
Black lawyers in America ?
Put some respect on their names ! Let's dive into the heart of why HBCUs matter.
The impact of HBCUs goes beyond just the numbers. They provide a culture
where Black students can thrive. It's a space where they can feel safe,
nurtured, and surrounded by like-minded, diverse Black people. HBCUs
offer an education that not only prepares students to excel in their
chosen professions, but also empowers them to become leaders and
change-makers.
At the same time, the hard truth is that too many Black students across
the country don't have college funds or family savings to help them pay
for school -- forcing them to take out student loans and be burdened
with student loan debt upon graduation.
Graduates of HBCUs have an average debt load of $32,373 after
graduation – 19% higher than peers at non-HBCUs. That's where our
collective power steps in, all of our futures depend on it.
Friend – ALL student debt must go. Add your name to our petition to urge
President Biden to cancel ALL student debt once and for all.
HBCU leaders are reimagining our futures and empowering generations to
come. That's why we were able to create the Student Solidarity Fund,
through which we provided financial support to over 500+ students in 66
HBCUs.
The work does not stop there, either. BLMGNF is excited to continue building relationships to best serve our HBCU communities. That's why we also launched our BLM x HBCU Student Ambassadors Program with 6 Ambassadors from various HBCUs. This program is just the beginning of what this kind of partnership and community can do.
Education is a crucial pillar for our organization – it's also a journey
that uplifts our communities and fuels progress. To alleviate the Black
student debt crisis, President Biden must provide relief to the
borrowers who are currently struggling under the weight of their student
debt.
Creating opportunities and investing in education is a necessary step
toward Black liberation. It not only uplifts our people but also allows
Black families to build intergenerational wealth. President Biden needs
to hear these exact words– sign on to our petition and help make sure
this reminder lands on his desk.
In love and solidarity,
Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation.
