Dear friend, the message is clear : Black votes and Black lives don’t matter to officials in Georgia.
On Tuesday, voters in 2 largely Black counties in the Atlanta area were forced to expose themselves to coronavirus for 3, 4, or 5 hours while waiting in line to vote. People reported dozens of broken voting machines, ballot shortages, and untrained poll workers.1
In response, Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger defended himself and said “It’s a good day for Georgia.”2
We are outraged, and we refuse to remain silent while white elected officials minimize the same Black voter suppression that’s been happening since Jim Crow.
We've already gotten some infuriating reports from Color Of Change members in Georgia :
"We arrived at the polling place at 7:07am. The line was already around the outside of the building. 6.5 hours later we actually made it inside to vote."- Sheryl
"The voting machines were not delivered. We completed paper ballots and placed them in a rolling bag."- Holly
"There were no machines, the staff was ill prepared ! The process not streamlined and took much longer than it should have. Stop trying to suppress our votes !!"- Aisha
Just as police murder of Black people has not changed since the origins of police as slave patrols, suppression of Black votes has not changed since the days of poll taxes and literacy tests. It is just one more tactic white politicians and their supporters use to silence and control our communities.
And just as the protests demanding justice for George Floyd are refusing to stand down until policing is radically changed, we must fight until Black voter suppression is eradicated everywhere.
Until justice is real,
Arisha, Jenni, Drew, Charles, Tammi, Cristel, Daniel, Alex, Scotty and the Color Of Change PAC team.
