Week In Review.

This past Tuesday marked International Overdose Awareness Day -- a time to honor those who have passed from a preventable overdose with action. VOCAL-NY joined community members and lawmakers in holding press conferences in the Bronx, Albany, Rochester, and Syracuse, calling on Governor Hochul to honor those lost to preventable overdose by taking action in her first 45 days of office. VOCAL-NY also held Narcan trainings in Douglas Park to educate the community on how to prevent overdoses.   Governor Hochul has a unique opportunity to course-correct Cuomo’s decade of harm by signing the Overdose Prevention Package on her desk, and authorizing the long stalled Overdose Prevention Center pilots. Biz Berthy, VOCAL-NY’s Drug Policy Campaign Coordinator underscored this fact with City Limits : “Overdose deaths across the state of New York rose by nearly 37 percent in 2020 compared to 2019, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. ‘She’s inheriting a really big crisis,” Berthy said of Hochul. ‘We’re just really hoping that she is a leader who leads with moral integrity.’”
