Friend, when I was growing up, July 4th did not hold the same significance for me since my ancestors were not freed until Juneteenth.
Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom and resilience for Black Americans. But it is also an historical reminder that the laws of this land have never been evenly applied.
Today, more than 400,000 people are being held in pretrial detention–locked up in jail, not because they have been convicted of a crime, but because they could not afford bail. Forty-three percent of those people are Black, despite Black people representing 13% of the total U.S. population. Race is a key determinant in what kind of justice a person will receive. Young Black defendants are 50% more likely to be held in pretrial detention. Black and brown defendants receive bail amounts twice as high as white defendants, and are less likely to be able to afford it.
Our laws remain unevenly applied with the effect–and intent–to keep as many Black people as possible in bondange for as long as possible.
Cash bail–putting a price tag on pretrial detention–disadvantages Black people who are more likely to be in poverty (by design), more likely to be arrested (by design), and more likely to be charged (by design) than white defendants for the same behaviors. And pretrial detention significantly increases the likelihood of conviction.
We cannot properly celebrate Juneteenth without working to undo every system that unfairly keeps Black people in bondage.
