Friend,
Earlier today a devastating 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck southeast Afghanistan. Sadly, nearly 1,000 people have lost their lives and many more are injured.
The earthquake is impacting tens of thousands of internally displaced Afghans and refugees from Pakistan living in the region. Shelters have been turned to rubble in an instant and families are in dire need of protection.
I'm sure your heart breaks as mine does reading this news — butyou can help make a difference. UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency has already deployed staff to the most affected areas to assess the needs on the ground and is rushing emergency supplies to vulnerable children, women and families in need.
The best way you can support families in Afghanistan — and families around the world who have lost their homes — is to make a compassionate emergency gift. With your monthly gift today, you stand with refugee families at the moment they are forced to flee — and during the days ahead while they rebuild. Your compassion and their resilience is a powerful combination.
Tragically, this is just the latest in a series of emergencies to hit the country, and displaced people are among the most vulnerable. UNHCR has been on the ground in Afghanistan for decades and continues to deliver lifesaving aid, shelter and protection to people forced to flee. But we cannot do it alone.
Please make an emergency monthly gift now to help support families who are living through some of their most terrifying moments — today, and whenever a crisis occurs.
We know just how much you care and will continue to update you on how your generosity is making a difference.
With gratitude,
Anne-Marie Grey Executive Director and CEO USA for UNHCR.
