Friend, happy Juneteenth ! Juneteenth is finally a federal holiday, but instead of just enjoying another day off of work, we need to ensure that the history of this holiday isn’t being forgotten. It’s ironic that corporations are trying to cash in (see : ice cream brands that try to trademark Juneteenth), and elected officials applaud themselves for making Juneteenth a federal day of celebration, all while many students across the country don’t even know what this day represents. We won’t stand by while politicians celebrate Juneteenth while ignoring the ugly truths about the foundation of this nation. Today, as we celebrate how far we come, let’s also focus on fighting against legislation in several states that would actively prevent students from learning about Black history—including Juneteenth and all it stands for. Hip Hop Caucus believes Black history should be bigger than any day or month. Our culture should never be left out of the conversation, and we’re going to keep advocating for our communities until this country reconciles its dark past with the hope for an equitable future. Join our movement and help Hip Hop Caucus keep speaking truth to power about the history of structural racism: Chip in >> For Future Generations, Rev. Yearwood President & CEO Hip Hop Caucus. |
