Supportive Housing Tenants Bill of Rights As of May 9, 2022, every supportive housing provider in New York City is required to provide every tenant in supportive housing with a notice clearly explaining their tenancy rights, and detailing key information about their housing. Week in Review.

The New York State legislative session came to a close this week, and state leadership failed to prioritize legislation that would help New Yorkers in crisis in every corner of the state. Speaker Carl Heastie and Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins failed to hold votes on bills addressing the crises of HIV/AIDS, homelessness, mass incarceration and preventable overdoses. VOCAL-NY responded in a statement, saying :   “The lack of action by Speaker Carl Heastie and Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins does not reflect the support our policy demands had this session – both from the public and from state lawmakers. It simply shows that state leadership is out of touch with the most urgent issues facing New Yorkers, favoring issues that they think will win them points this election year. They should be ashamed.”   Now, it’s on Governor Hochul to take action — we urge her to use executive action to authorize Overdose Prevention Centers statewide, and use her power of executive clemency to free those who are wrongfully convicted and those left waiting on parole justice.

Futures NYC

This month, VOCAL-NY joined Make the Road NY and Hester Street to launch the Futures NYC campaign, an initiative to promote bold policy solutions through the lens of artists from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. Through Futures NYC, artists from all across New York City will demonstrate that art can be the catalyst for a just, equitable city.
