Friend,
An important new bill just passed through the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee : the Ruby Mountains Protection Act. Now, it can go to the Senate floor for a vote.
The Te-Moak Tribe of the Western Shoshone have ancestral homelands in this mountain range (which they call “Duka Doya”) in what is now Nevada. Their advocacy protected this area in 2019, when the U.S. Forest Service tried to auction it for oil and gas drilling after failing to consult with the Tribe.
After public outcry, the Forest Service denied that lease request and Senator Cortez Masto introduced the Ruby Mountains Protection Act to permanently protect the area from oil and gas leasing.
As Te-Moak Tribal Chairman Joseph Holley said about the impacts of fossil fuel leasing : “Kids will lose their culture, tradition and history.”[1]
Fossil fuel drilling in the area would poison and dry up the water, devastating the Tribe’s cultural traditions passed on to each generation.
Traditions include gathering food and medicines for ceremonies, and this continuity of our culture and way of living are threatened if the land is not permanently protected.
Together, we can defend Mother Earth and hold the federal government accountable to honor tribal treaties and respect Native sovereignty.
Judith Le Blanc (Caddo)
Executive Director.
