D'Juan Collins is a VOCAL-NY leader and will be in Manhattan Criminal Court this Monday. D'Juan is asking for folks to be physically present because this is a case that has been fabricated against him since 2019. Let's make sure our brother is NOT ALONE.

Wednesday, May 24 @ 5 PM: Care not Criminalization March ! We're joining our coalition partners— The People's Plan and Communities United for Police Reform at City Hall— for a march to fight back against Mayor Adams' budget, which would slash funding for vital things like housing, healthcare education and *increase* the budget for the NYPD and DOC. As it stands now, the Mayor's budget proposal completely fails to make the bold investments we desperately need ! We know that we cannot arrest our way out of the crises our communities are facing on a daily basis– yet Mayor Adams continues to push for more policing and criminalization.

Week in Review

On Saturday, VOCAL-NY stood with Housing Justice for All and hundreds of tenant protection advocates for the Rent Is Too Damn High march. Activists started by hearing remarks from speakers at Cadman Plaza, and then marched across the Brooklyn Bridge to demand state leadership pass Good Cause and the Housing Access Voucher Program (HAVP).

Are You Eligible for the NYC Bail Settlement ?

A settlement has been reached in a class action lawsuit that claims the City of New York violated the law when it delayed releasing people after their bail was paid. This means that anyone who was released on bail (whether cash bail, bail bond, partially secured bond, or any form of payment the New York Department of Corrections accepts for payment of bail) from Rikers or any NYC jail between October 4, 2014 and October 21, 2022 may be entitled to $3,500 or more. In order to receive payment, eligible individuals must submit a simple claim before June 6, 2023.
