Friend,
Since 1980, the number of women imprisoned in the United States has increased more than 700 percent. And since three-fourths of those women are of childbearing age, the number of pregnant women in prison has increased dramatically as well.
Sadly, when pregnant women are incarcerated, they’re often treated inhumanely, with disastrous consequences for the well-being of both the mother and the child.
That’s why Rep. Ayanna Pressley recently introduced the Justice for Incarcerated Moms Act.
This crucial and life-saving legislation would end the practice of shackling pregnant women, promote mental health programs for incarcerated women, and fund a study to better understand the health consequences of incarcerating pregnant women.
Tell Congress: Pass the Justice for Incarcerated Moms Act.
"Too often, incarcerated pregnant people are forgotten and ignored, and their maternal health – particularly for Black women, who are imprisoned at twice the rate of white women – suffers because of it," said Rep. Pressley.
The Justice for Incarcerated Moms Act has been endorsed by more than 150 organizations. Can you sign the petition to add your support today ?
