Friend,
Yesterday we commemorated one year since the Israeli military murdered Shireen Abu Akleh, a beloved Palestinian American journalist. We honor Shireen by continuing to tell the truth, which she did every day by exposing Israel’s human rights abuses against Palestinians. Just this week, the Israeli military dropped bombs on a captive Palestinian population in Gaza, intentionally murdering families and children sleeping in their beds. The U.S. government funds these massacres, which traumatize generations of people. On May 11 last year, an Israeli soldier shot and killed Shireen while she was clearly marked as press. Investigations by news organizations and human rights groups have concluded that she was intentionally targeted. Then Israeli forces brutally attacked mourners at her funeral. The Israeli military has a pattern of killing journalists and U.S. citizens with impunity.1 And Shireen’s family is still calling for the U.S. to hold Israel accountable for the government’s murder of a U.S. citizen. As the top funder of the Israeli military, the U.S. government should use our leverage to demand the Israeli government end its apartheid regime and allow true democracy to thrive. Instead, the bipartisan majority in Congress has insisted that Israel doesn’t have to comply with basic human rights laws to receive U.S. military aid. This is a stark contrast from our standards for all other countries. In a world trying to erase the Palestinian people, Shireen Abu Akleh was committed to shining a spotlight on everyday Palestinian life under Israeli oppression. She knew that everyone deserves human rights, dignity, and freedom. Thank you,
Rashida.
