The Writer’s Guild of America is on strike in Hollywood, and there’s no end in sight. Corporate vampires are trying to use the threat of AI to turn creative work into gig economy work, reducing people who generate billions of dollars into glorified Uber drivers, with all the employment protections that that entails. Venture capital won’t rest until the only good job left is a corporate CEO. We won’t rest until every job is a good job. That’s the bottom line of this fight. The WGA must win. Streaming services have opened massive loopholes in the way that writers were ordinarily paid, and instead of seeking to bargain in good faith, studios are trying to destroy the economic foundation of Hollywood. This may sound like a battle of billionaires against millionaires, but the dynamics at play are the same as every other industry where corporate power and greed try to squeeze every drop out of labor. Corporate consolidation has given individual studios massive power -- and they’re leveraging it to take a bigger and bigger slice of profits, and paying creators less. Our friends at More Perfect Union interviewed a few writers ahead of the strike about what the issues are. These writers told us that the way television has evolved in the streaming era specifically allows corporations to shortchange writers, even as the corporations rake in more and more money. The writers are struggling to claw back to the same slice of the pie that they had 10 years ago.
The corporations are making even more money than before―they’re just doing it in a way that they won’t have to share. Hollywood writers deserve to be paid what they’re owed. Solidarity forever,
