Friend,
Update : The Supreme Court has temporarily protected access to mifepristone, an important abortion pill that’s been proven safe for decades.
But access is still under threat in the courts. This is an urgent time to protect our right to sovereignty over our own bodies, especially for Indigenous people who face additional barriers to abortion care.
We need Congress to defend and expand abortion access at the national level by passing the 2023 Women's Health Protection Act.
If passed, the legislation would prohibit governmental restrictions on providing and accessing abortion care. It would lift barriers to care that disproportionately impact Black, brown, and Indigenous people, trans and queer people, disabled people, low-income people, and people living in rural areas (including on pueblos and reservations).
Indigenous women have been leaders in the fight to expand abortion access even back when Roe v. Wade was in place.
The federal government must fulfill its treaty obligations to respect Native sovereignty -- including sovereignty to make decisions about our own bodies without government interference -- and to provide us with healthcare, including abortion care.
But last year the U.S. Supreme Court eliminated the constitutional right to abortion by overturning Roe v. Wade, and since then, many states have denied and even criminalized abortion care.
By passing the Women's Health Protection Act, our legislators would not only restore protection but expand access.
Sign the petition: Demand Congress pass the Women's Health Protection Act.
Hawwih (thank you) for taking action to defend sovereignty,
Judith LeBlanc (Caddo)
Executive Director.
